11 Aug 10 Bull Riding Equipment – This Ain’t Your First Rodeo

The Types Of Bull Riding Equipment

Bull riding equipment is essential for this activity. The various equipment includes the following:

  • Rodeo gear Bag

This type of bag is specifically for bull riding gear, so that the rider will not lose any of his/her equipment.

  • Bull Rope

A bull rope is considered to be a primary piece of equipment. It consists of a braided piece of polypropylene, grass, or a blend of both. A place for your hand is in the center of the rope (usually braided) and made stiff with leather incorporated into the braid. There are 2 sides to a bull rope as follows:

  1. One side has an adjustable knot that has been tied to fit the size of the bull
  2. The other side consists of a flat braid that is coated with rosin, so that it will not be slippery to the rider’s hand
  • Bull Rope Bag

This is the bag that carries the bull rope.

  • Cowboy Hat/Helmet

It is imperative that a rider wears either a cowboy hat or helmet. However, in more recent years helmets have been worn to protect the head of the rider during falls or close encounters with the bull.

  • Protective Vest

A protective vest is a safety measure that is necessary to help a rider stay safe.

  • Gloves

Gloves are used mainly for the prevention of rope burns. These items are usually made of leather. In order for these gloves to not be lost they are often attached in the event of a rough ride.

  • Chaps

Chaps are made of specific patterns, designs, and styles. They are also considered protective gear for the legs and thighs of a rider.

  • Rosin/Benzoic

Rosin is a sticky type of substance that helps with a rider’s grip on the ropes. Benzoin is also used, especially for bareback riders to prevent injuries to one’s hand.

  • Athletic Cup

This is to protect the rider and prevent injuries.

  • Boots

Cowboy boots have spurs that keep a rider balanced. The bulls do not feel these spurs, since their hide is thick.

  • Mouth Piece

Most of the above equipment is used for safety measures.

Bull equipment consists of a flank type of rope that is made of cotton and is tied around the neck of the bull’s flank. This is encouragement for the bull for it to use its back legs more. It causes the bull to “buck”. However, if it is not properly tied, the bucking motion will not occur.

Arenas are where these bull riding events take place. It is because of these locations that bull equipment is needed. These large open areas are encompassed by 6 – 7 ft fences and prevent the fans from getting hurt. These fences are considered to be among the items referred to as bull equipment.

All in all, bull riding equipment is necessary and is implemented for comfort, as well as safety precautions.  Most items are affordable; however the cost does increase after all of the needed pieces are purchased.
